Privacy policy

Mote is a notes app at usemote.app and on iOS. It is built to need as little about you as possible: no email address, no password, no advertising, no analytics. This page says what Mote stores and why.

Notes

The text, formatting and attachments you put in a note are stored on Mote's servers so that the note can be opened from its link, edited together and kept for later. Every note is reachable by anyone who has its link, so a note's contents are visible to whoever you share the link with. Mote does not read your notes for any purpose other than storing and serving them.

Who you are in a note

Each visitor gets a display name and color, made up from nature words unless you change them. They are shown to other people in the same note so everyone can see who is typing. They are stored in your browser or on your device, and with your account if you create one.

Accounts and passkeys

You can keep a list of your notes by saving them with a passkey. A passkey account stores your display name, color, an optional photo, the public half of the passkey and the ids of the notes you have edited. Mote never sees the private half of a passkey; it stays with Apple, Google, a password manager or the device it was created on. There are no passwords, email addresses or phone numbers.

When you are signed in, a session cookie or token keeps you signed in for 90 days. Notes you edited before signing in are attached to your account at that point.

The iOS app and App Clip

The app and its App Clip talk to the same servers as the website. On the device they keep your session, display name and the list of notes you have opened so the App Clip and the full app behave as one. Camera, microphone and photo library access are requested only when you choose to add a photo, video or recording to a note, and only that item is uploaded.

Connected agents

You can let an AI agent or another tool read and edit your notes by connecting it through Mote's authorization page. Mote then stores that connection and the tokens that let the tool act for you, and the tool's provider receives the contents of the notes it reads or edits. You can end a connection at any time by revoking its token or asking us to remove it.

Servers and logs

Mote runs on servers operated by Railway in the United States. Like most web services, the servers keep short-lived request logs (address, browser or app version, time and path) to keep the service running and to investigate abuse. They are not used to profile you and are not kept longer than needed.

What Mote does not do

• No advertising, and no advertising identifiers.
• No analytics or tracking libraries in the website or the apps.
• No selling, renting or sharing of your data, apart from the hosting and agent cases above.
• No accounts for children: Mote is not directed at anyone under 13.

Deleting your data

Email jarodluebbert@gmail.com from any address and name the note links or the display name of the account you want removed. Notes, attachments, account details and connections are deleted within 30 days. Because notes are shared by link, deleting a note removes it for everyone who had the link.
